The Irony in Goodness

One fine day exactly five years ago, as we walked down the boardwalk holding hands, I asked you that question.

“Why do you love me?”

“Because I see the goodness in you. But more importantly because you are my best friend and I want to make sure you get all the happiness in the world..” you said.

***

For twenty odd years, I was happy in my own little world. Then you came along, tore down my walls, breached my defenses and barged in. Even more so, you conquered spaces I didn’t know I had within me.

You altered my habits and beliefs. You changed my routine, my prayers, my hopes and my dreams. You imprinted upon every thought and action of mine. You transformed me in ways I hadn’t imagined possible.

***

Six months ago, we went to the wedding planner you thought best. We picked out your wedding suit, my pretty white gown and our wedding bands in gold. We got the best chef, stylist and photographers in town. The invitations printed and addressed to guests in silver and white because you thought it elegant.

I believed I had the fairy tale come true. I had never dreamt of a great future before you. But now I was letting myself dream, fantasizing a happily ever after.

***

All it took was a single moment of weakness on your part to wreck it. You were drunk. But not drunk enough when you slept with someone else. She is two months pregnant now.

The hotel manager, the caterer and the florist keep calling me asking why we cancelled our reservation. I cannot bring myself to tell them. You called the marriage off.

***

Today, as you stand before me with your head hanging low, your lips stretch to reveal a sad smile.

“How could you do this to me?” I rage.

“Because I see the goodness in you. But more importantly because you are my best friend and I want to make sure you get all the happiness in the world..” you say.

  1. The guy truly loved the Girl and hence he let her go. He was ashamed of his behavior and couldn’t leave the girl who was pregnant too. But that single deed made things upside down. I may be wrong but these are my conclusions of characters. Loved the post 🙂

    1. Well there are a lot of things to consider her, though. Emotions vs Events. Which one defines us and when in relationship what is more important of the 2 Es. It totally depends on the 2 persons or 3 in this case, but there are certain things that needs to be identified the way I do.

Does the event prioritize the decisions we take ?
Do the emotions which is not visible, overdriven by the events, which is visible ?
What about the girl, the first girl, of whom the post is about, what about her ! Isn’t she at great lost, because of a event by the boy ?

@Darshith – Point Blank Question – If you had to consider what went wrong here and who is the person to be blaimed, whom do you point out. (*Please let me know if this is allowed here, commenting like this ? )

@Visakha Since you posted, your opinion would matter. Please share 🙂

      1. Thank you for sharing your thoughts with us Bhanu!
To start with, I think the first two questions share the same answer. Events take front seat and emotions are overridden when people try to be ‘practical’. Given the second woman has become pregnant with help from him, the hero of my story cannot choose to ignore her and start a life with the first woman. Because it’ll be only months before he has to provide for two families – one by choice and another by compulsion. Besides, how society would react to it also a concern. Hence, it is not practical for any of them to go ahead with this.
Yes, the first lady has lost not just the best five years of her youth but also probably years before she finds love again. But that is unavoidable.
If you intend to have a discussion, I would request you to create a new post on your blog because I don’t want to spam other readers! Thanks. 🙂

      2. As 3 people are involved and this is the post for the 1st girl, I would say she decides because it’s her life. She loved the guy but then the guy did a mistake(I won’t reckon it as a blunder for unknown reasons because it don’t seem bad to me). But then the decision of the guy is also important because He can choose to be with his love(the 1st girl) and forget the 2nd one. The 2nd girl will be left alone and will definitely feel USED. But, if the guy chooses the 2nd girl, which he does as per the post, he has to sacrifice his love for righteousness because he has to pay for his mistake(again it ain’t a blunder). As the 1st girl was related to the guy, she also pays for the mistake of the guy. In this case, loss is for everyone but it would be wise enough not to put blame on anybody because life in itself is confusing and all tangled up. Small events(the mistake of the boy was not that small though) can affect lives drastically. For more details watch BACK TO THE FUTURE movies 😀

      3. Ok Boss! Don’t watch the movie 😉 But remember every thing matters so based on that our future changes and as lives are inter-twined, actions of one affects the actions/thinking of other related people 😉 I strongly believe that the actions of parents affects the thinking/actions of their children 🙂

  2. Visakha, First I must say I experienced a very similar scenario when I was very young – long ago, and again after seventeen years of marriage to my best friend. While I commiserate with you, I also congratulate you for a wonderfully structured well worded, sensitive, and essentially captivating post. Solely because of my background I read the first time dreading the outcome, hoping for something different. However, I read it again later, appreciating every well chosen word and your chosen format. ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤

    1. Thank you for your kind words, Roos! You are too generous! 🙂
It is indeed saddening that you had a similar experience (twice?!). But then again, as the saying goes, “If it’s not a happy ending, then it’s not the end!” 🙂
Do stick around. I’d love to hear from you more often! Have a good day.
